Job: Garstang Show Secretary
Location: Working from home/ own office

Garstang & District Agricultural and Horticultural Society was formed back in 1809 with the first show being held in 1813. The show is held annually on the first Saturday in August at the Garstang Showfield off Green Lane East, Garstang PR3 1JS. Last year the show attracted over 10,000 visitors for this one day event.

The role of Show Secretary will require wide ranging skills, including the ability to work with a number of different people. Apart from the run up to show week, the role will primarily be office based with the main focus being on the organisation, planning and management of the annual show. The role will be supported by two part-time workers to cover administrative and marketing support.

This exciting opportunity to be involved in a popular local event, will be part-time, although extra hours will be required in the run up to show day. This self-employed role will require the candidate to be flexible with their working hours. You will also be required to provide support for the Society’s other activities. The Society is a Charity Limited by Guarantee, and is governed by a panel of Directors and a show committee, all of whom are volunteers with a wide range of agricultural and horticultural backgrounds and experience.

Experience at organising similar events and activities coupled with the ability to liaise with a wide range of people and to run an office is essential. This post requires exceptional organisational skills, the ability to work on one’s own initiative and also be an active member of the whole team. The post is a highly responsible one, requiring a mature outlook and a degree of flexibility. We are most definitely seeking someone with a 'can do' attitude and a bright and enthusiastic personality to join our hardworking and successful team. A knowledge of or background in farming or the countryside and a keen desire to promote the Society’s objectives and activities will be advantageous.  

The role of Show Secretary covers a wide range of different responsibilities and includes:

Key Tasks:
  • Planning and booking all entertainments
  • Working alongside sections to provide secretarial support
  • Help to produce society publications and schedules
  • Process entries
  • Organise and promote trade and sponsor packages
  • Attend regular monthly meetings
  • Produce work schedules
  • Maintain the Shows affiliations and memberships, contracts and licenses
  • Manage the day to day finances of the society in a cost-effective manner, working to a tight budget
  • Organisation and secretarial support for any fundraising events.
Personal Specification
  • The role will also have an element of trouble shooting, solving and identifying problems which might arise
  • Candidates must be available full time during the two weeks building up to the Show
  • You must also be available full time for one week after the show
  • Candidates must demonstrate examples of good record keeping
  • Must be competent on a computer; should be able to work with Microsoft Word and Excel.
